Segment 1 (begun in 2003)

 
Mason School

Mason Community Learning Center

The new Mason Community Learning Center, located on the site of Mason Park, opened to students and staff on January 22, 2008.   Official dedication took place on February 9.   The new building, designed to accommodate 400 students, can be accessed from E. Exchange St. or Crouse St.

Academy at Robinson

Robinson Community Learning Center

The new Robinson Community Learning Center will open to students on August 27.   The old building will be demolished and that land developed into playground space and additional parking.

Segment 2 (begun in 2005)

 
Barber School

Barber School

A new Barber Community Learning Center will be built on the current site.   There is not room to build the new school while the current building stands, so the existing building has been demolished.   As of February 4, 2008, Barber students are being bussed to the old Mason School building where they will remain during construction of the new Barber.

Grades three through six will occupy the second floor of the new building while grades K-2 will be housed on the first floor.

Estimated completion date for the new Barber is between 18 and 24 months from the beginning of construction.

Projected Cost:   $8,601,889.28

East High

East High School / Goodyear Middle School

Asbestos abatement of the East High building has been completed.   Seventh and eighth graders, currently housed at Goodyear Middle School, will be moved to the East building at completion of the project.   During the renovation process, East students (grades 9-12) are being housed at the Central-Hower building.   Goodyear students will remain in their current building until East is renovated.

A new, separate, two-story wing for the middle school will be built on property being acquired to the south (towards E. Market St.) of the current East building.   (On May 12 Akron City Council authorized $275,000 for the purchase of the joint properties at 28 and 28 1/2 Brittain Rd. currently occupied by Bob's Paint & Body and the Hubcap Shop.)

Parking will be moved to the front of the current building along Brittain Rd.   A new cafeteria and kitchen will be added in the area of the current main office while new science labs will be added at the rear of the building.

Estimated completion date for the renovated building is the summer of 2010.

Hotchkiss School

Hotchkiss School

Hotchkiss Elementary School closed at the end of the 2005-2006 school year.   The building is now being used for programs previously housed in the Betty Jane School annex.
 

Segment 4 (to begin about 2009)

 
Seiberling School

Seiberling School

A new Seiberling Elementary School will be constructed on the existing site and the old school will be demolished.

Final Segment (to begin about 2014)

 
Goodyear Middle School

Goodyear Middle School

Goodyear Middle School seventh and eighth graders will be move to a renovated East High building while the sixth graders will be incorporated into Barber, Mason, Robinson, and Seiberling.   The Goodyear building will be used as swing space for other schools and will be demolished at the end of that period.

Projected Cost:   $3,540,702.90
