Jump Start Scholarship Program

sponsored and administered by the

East High Alumni Association

     Background

In 2005, the East High School Alumni Association began awarding $1,000 college scholarships to selected graduating seniors.   The funds for these scholarships are made available through endowments given by individuals or family groups who recognize the importance of continuing the educational process beyond high school.

     Introduction

At the July 23, 2007 Akron Board of Education meeting, the Alumni Association introduced the Jump Start Scholarship Program in hopes of increasing the number of scholarships awarded each year.   The goal is to have the first of these scholarships ready to award when the students return to the newly-remodeled East High Community Learning Center in the fall of 2010.

     Sponsorship

A Jump Start Scholarship can be sponsored by an individual, a family group, or members of a graduating class.   The Class of 1951 is the first class thus far to take on sponsorship.   Contributors need not be East High graduates.   Businesses are welcome to participate.

     Financing

The Alumni Association asks for a commitment of $1,000 a year for a ten year period.   If a donor wishes, the entire amount can be paid in a lump sum.   The funds are held in an interest-bearing escrow account.   Since the Alumni Association is a 501(c)(3) organization, all contributions towards a scholarship are deductible from federal income taxes.

     Selection

Scholarship recipients are selected by current East High staff and Alumni Association Officers.   Scholarships are awarded each May at the Senior Recognition Assembly.   Currently all awards are for one time and are non-renewable.
