Big Changes Coming
for the SAT

The College Board, administrator of the SAT college admission test, has announced major changes in testing procedure effective in 2024 (effective in 2023 for the PSAT).

Highlights of the changes are:

  • the test will change from a paper-and-pencil format to a digital format;
  • testing time is shortened from three hours to two hours;
  • reading passages will be shortened; and
  • calculators will be allowed on math section of the test.

Students will be able to choose between using their own devices for the test — including a tablet or a laptop — or using the schools' devices.

Despite these changes, the SAT will still be scored on a basis of 1600 total points and be administered in a school or testing center.
